In short, here's my review: I love Sunsama for its use of time blocking, daily planning and shutdown rituals, daily and weekly review (and colourful graphs), and integration with other apps like Notion and Google Calendar, and it's so simple to use, so yes, totally worth it!

Sunsama Review

Sunsama is a productivity tool designed to help you organize your daily tasks and plans. It aims to streamline work by integrating various tools and fostering collaboration among team members.

Key Features of Sunsama

Sunsama is packed with features that make it stand out in the crowded market of task management apps. I wrote a post that goes into great detail about 17 Sunsama features I love, but here are a few of the main features for this Sunsama review:

Daily Planning

  • Structure Your Day: Sunsama lets you plan your day with a focus on what’s most important. You can prioritize tasks and set realistic goals.
  • Timeboxing or time blocking: Allocate specific time slots for each task to keep you on track.

Focus Mode

  • Focus mode lets you focus on just that one task. My ADHD friend loves this mode to minimize distractions.
  • There is also the ability to use a Pomodoro timer instead of a plain timer.

Integration with Other Tools

  • Sunsama integrates seamlessly with popular apps like Trello, Notion, Google Calendar, and more. This allows you to pull tasks and events from other platforms into one centralized place. I have it integrated with my Notion.
  • Sunsama has also recently joined Zapier so you can integrate 5000+ apps to Sunsama using a Zap. I have used this to integrate with Google Sheets.

Collaboration Options

  • Team Planning: Share your daily plans with team members. You can also see what your teammates are working on, making coordination easier.
  • Task Assignment: Assign tasks to team members and track their progress in real time.

User Interface

  • Intuitive Design: Sunsama’s interface is clean and easy to navigate. It avoids clutter, making it simple to focus on your tasks.
  • Drag-and-Drop Functionality: Easily move tasks around to adjust your daily plan. This is one of my favourite functions, so easy to use!

The Blog and Emails

  • This isn't about the app itself, but the team who built this app, didn't just build it and walk away, they teach you how to “work like a human, and not a machine”.
  • The Sunsama website has a blog where you can learn about time management and how to increase productivity. This is what I teach as well so you know that I like this company to be recommending you read their blog. 😉
  • The team sends weekly emails and you can even sign up for productivity email courses to help you get the most out of Sunsama.

Daily Shutdown

  • This offers me such a nice rush of dopamine at the end of my day. I just love reviewing what I accomplished and seeing portrayed in a beautiful chart. Again for my ADHD'ers, this is just the right amount of “yesss” to end your day!
  • The very last thing you see is a nice motivational quote and you're sent to go live the rest of your day NOT on your computer or working.

Pricing

Sunsama offers a subscription plan that might seem higher than some competitors, especially since some apps are free,

Sunsama’s pricing is $20 USD per user per month, but you can save $4 a month by signing up for a yearly subscription of $192 USD.

Now you might be thinking, why should I pay when other apps are free? Fair enough, but I haven't liked other apps as much as I like Sunsama, and I'm willing to pay for something that works and saves me time, because that saves me money, so it all evens out. In fact, I'd wager that I'm making more money before Sunsama helping me to be the most productive and still have a great work-life balance.

The banner features three options: a '14-Day Free Trial' with an orange 'Start free trial' button, a 'Yearly Subscription' priced at $16 per month billed annually, and a 'Monthly Subscription' at $20 per month billed monthly. The text above reads 'Try it for free for 2 weeks. Subscribe if you love it.

If you're interested in reading more of why Sunsama charges a fee, check out their pricing manifesto.

Normally Sunsama only gives a 14-day trial (no credit card required), but using my link will give you a 30-day trial (again no credit card) and you only pay if you want to continue after the trial.

Downsides to Sunsama

Are there any downsides to Sunsama? I could only think of two that might be potential “downsides”, but for me, it's not a big deal.

Cost

One common complaint is the cost of Sunsama. It's pricier than some other task management apps. If you’re on a tight budget, this could be a drawback.

While I can see why people don't want to pay for this type of app since there are free ones on the market, I still feel that the quality that you're getting is completely worth the $20/month. Plus, like I said above, time is money. and this app saves me time which is saving me the $20/month so in my eyes, Sunsama is essentially free.

Image titled 'Pricing Manifesto' explaining the principles behind a company's pricing strategy. The text includes a header stating 'We're often asked why our pricing is different from other productivity tools. Here's what motivates our decision.' Below this, there are multiple bullet points: 'Price should be determined by value created,' 'Free forever plans create bad incentives, and aren't sustainable,' 'Higher prices create higher expectations, which creates a higher quality product,' 'Priced for sustainability, not for future salvation,' 'No psychological trickery,' 'No lifetime deals,' 'Discounts for commitment,' 'Fall in love, then pay,' 'No fake sales,' and 'Cancellation should be easy.' There is also an orange button labeled 'Read the full manifesto

Limited Customization

Some users have pointed out the limited customization options. While Sunsama covers the basics well, it doesn't offer the depth of customization that power users might want. If you like to tweak every little feature, you might find Sunsama a bit restrictive.

While some may find this a downside, this is actually an advantage in my eyes. How many people do you know who are like “I love Notion, but there's too many things I can do with it.” I agree. I love Notion as well, and I still use it for many other business needs, but not my time management. I switched fully over to Sunsama within two days of using it.

If you are spending so much time tweaking and customizing your time management app and not actually getting your tasks done, the app isn't doing its job which is to make you productive. You're being less productive.

Who Could Benefit From Using Sunsama?

Someone said to me the other day: “I don't need Sunsama, I'm a student. I need something that will work for me.” Sunsama isn't just for business owners, it can be used by anyone!

For Busy Professionals

If your day is stacked with back-to-back meetings, project deadlines, and countless emails, Sunsama is just what you need. It allows you to organize your workday with ease. You can:

  • Plan your day: Break down tasks by the hour, ensuring nothing slips through the cracks.
  • Integrate with apps: Seamlessly connect with tools you already use like Google Calendar, Trello, and Notion.
  • Work-life balance: Allocate time for personal tasks, promoting a healthier work-life dynamic.

For Students

Students juggling classes, assignments, and extracurricular activities will find Sunsama handy.

  • Track assignments: Never miss a deadline with daily and weekly planning views.
  • Stay organized: Manage different subjects and extracurricular activities in one place.
  • Set goals: Create academic and personal goals to stay motivated throughout the semester.

For Freelancers and Creatives

Freelancers and creatives often need to balance multiple projects and clients. Sunsama offers features that cater to this lifestyle:

  • Project management: Track various projects effortlessly without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Daily focus: Decide which project needs your attention each day, helping you prioritize effectively.
  • Client deadlines: Keep track of important deadlines to maintain a professional reputation.

For the Everyday User

You don't need to have a chaotic schedule to benefit from Sunsama. Even if you’re someone who just wants to be a bit more organized, here’s what Sunsama can do for you:

  • Simple to use: Its intuitive interface means you can start getting organized quickly.
  • Personal growth: Allocate time for hobbies, reading, or exercise alongside your daily to-dos.
  • Peace of mind: Knowing all your tasks are laid out can reduce stress and leave you feeling accomplished by the end of the day.

So, Is It The Best?

So is it the best time management app out there? You bet! I have tried a ton of time management apps (it's kind of what I do) and this one is by far, hands down, the best time management app out there.

Sunsama stands out by offering a harmonious blend of tasks and time management designed to fine-tune your daily workflow. Whether you’re a busy professional, a student, a freelancer, or just someone looking to get more organized, Sunsama provides the tools to enhance your productivity.
